Climate change, environmental pollution, the responsible use of natural resources, and the transition to a low-carbon economy require the involvement not only of governments and international organizations, but also of businesses. Residents of cities are increasingly concerned about air quality, the lack of shade in urban areas, the reduction of green spaces, and growing water scarcity. Environmental issues are no longer discussed only by scientists, environmental experts, and international institutions. Today, they directly affect the quality of life of millions of people.

Participants of the Green Generation project during the presentation of the children’s eco-almanac Green Generation.

When people talk about environmental issues, they usually think of industrial enterprises, vehicles, or energy companies. Banks rarely find themselves at the center of environmental discussions. They do not extract natural resources, build factories, or generate emissions. Yet through lending and investment decisions, the financial sector plays a significant role in shaping the economy of tomorrow.

Will a solar power plant be built, or another energy-intensive facility? Will businesses that invest in resource-efficient technologies receive support? Will projects aimed at reducing environmental impact continue to grow? The answers to these questions largely depend on where financial resources are directed.

As a result, banks around the world are increasingly becoming participants in the environmental transformation of the economy. Their role is no longer limited to providing loans. Today, financial institutions are expected to understand climate-related risks, support sustainable projects, and contribute to fostering a more responsible approach to the use of natural resources.

Around the world, this approach is known as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) — a framework of principles that helps companies consider not only their financial performance, but also their impact on the environment, society, and the quality of corporate governance.

At Ipak Yuli Bank, the ESG agenda includes the development of green finance, support for energy-efficiency and renewable energy projects, the integration of climate risk management, and the gradual reduction of the bank’s own environmental footprint.

Javhar Saidkamolov and Dinara Nurmukhamedova present the Green Generation project and the children’s eco-almanac Green Generation.
Photo: Ipak Yuli Bank / Green Generation

“Today, environmental protection and sustainable development are becoming an increasingly important part of the responsibility shared by businesses, society, and every individual. By adopting an ESG strategy and consistently implementing the principles of environmental and social responsibility, Ipak Yuli Bank views care for the future not as a temporary trend, but as a long-term value and an integral part of its activities,” says Javhar Saidkamolov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Ipak Yuli Bank.

However, this raises a question that sustainability experts are asking more and more often today: can environmental challenges be solved through technology and investment alone?

Writer and founder of the children’s environmental movement Time of Heroes, Madina Muminova, at the presentation of the children’s eco-almanac Green Generation.
Photo: Ipak Yuli Bank / Green Generation

Why Environmental Culture Is Becoming as Important as Technology

Modern wastewater treatment facilities can be built, solar energy projects can be financed, energy-efficient technologies can be introduced, and environmental standards can be developed. But if people continue to treat nature as an inexhaustible resource, the impact of such investments will remain limited.

The challenge is not only about technology. It is also about habits. About how we use water. How we manage waste. How we teach children the value of trees, clean air, and responsible stewardship of the environment.
That is why, in recent years, the conversation about sustainable development has increasingly moved beyond economics and into the fields of culture and education. According to UNESCO, education is considered one of the key tools for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Environmental culture is not shaped through prohibitions or punishment, but through knowledge, everyday habits, and personal responsibility.

Many researchers note that the patterns of behavior people carry throughout their lives are often formed in childhood. Moreover, children frequently become agents of change within their own families. After learning about waste sorting, water conservation, or environmental protection at school, they begin discussing these topics at home and can influence the habits and attitudes of their parents and relatives.

“However, a sustainable future cannot be built through technology, investment, or strategies alone. It begins with instilling values, fostering a culture of respect for the natural world, and understanding that safeguarding the future depends on the contribution of each and every one of us,” says Javhar Saidkamolov.

Young participants of the Green Generation project and their parents at the presentation of the children’s eco-almanac Green Generation.
Photo: Ipak Yuli Bank / Green Generation

When Children Become Authors of Environmental Solutions

This idea became the foundation of the Green Generation project, implemented by Ipak Yuli Bank in partnership with the children’s environmental movement Time of Heroes.

As part of the project, environmental lessons have already been conducted in 16 schools across Tashkent and other regions of Uzbekistan. By the end of the year, the organizers plan to expand the initiative to 36 schools nationwide and install eco-boxes for collecting used batteries in 20 educational institutions.

However, the organizers decided to go beyond the traditional format of environmental lectures. Instead of simply telling children about environmental challenges, they invited students to become authors of the environmental conversation themselves.

This led to the creation of the children’s eco-almanac Green Generation, bringing together stories, drawings, and reflections by children on nature, the future of the planet, and humanity’s responsibility toward the environment.

“The children were not simply learning about environmental issues — they were becoming authors of environmental stories. They wrote about the issues that concern them, reflected on the future of the planet, and proposed their own ideas for protecting nature. When a child begins to think about the kind of world they want to leave behind, environmental awareness stops being a theory and becomes part of their personal experience,” says Madina Muminova, writer and founder of the children’s environmental movement Time of Heroes.

More than one hundred children took part in creating the almanac. For many of them, it was their first opportunity to engage in a thoughtful conversation about environmental issues through creativity. Yet the significance of the project extends far beyond the book itself. It demonstrates that people begin to care about nature when they feel a personal connection to the issue and understand that their voice can make a difference.

Zilola Khamidova, designer of the Green Generation eco-almanac.

Photo: Ipak Yuli Bank / Green Generation

An Investment in the Future That Cannot Be Measured Immediately

When banks talk about green finance, climate risks, and sustainable development, the conversation usually focuses on large-scale projects, energy infrastructure, and investment. Yet a sustainable future depends on more than financial instruments alone. It also depends on the values people will hold ten, twenty, and thirty years from now.
“It was important for us not only to teach children about environmental issues, but also to hear their own voices. We wanted to understand what they think about nature, how they envision the future of our planet, and what they are willing to do to help preserve it. Every contribution shows that the younger generation cares deeply about environmental issues and is ready to treat the environment with responsibility and respect,” says Dinara Nurmukhamedova, Deputy Head of the Enterprise Risk Management Department at Ipak Yuli Bank.
Building an environmental culture does not deliver immediate results, nor does it appear in quarterly reports. Yet it shapes how future generations will treat water, land, energy, and natural resources. Twenty years from now, today’s schoolchildren will be making decisions that influence the environmental future of their country.
Perhaps the most important investment in sustainable development is not made only in technology or infrastructure. It is made in people — in their knowledge, their values, and their understanding that nature is not an endless resource, but a shared responsibility.

Can environmental problems be solved through technology and investment alone?
